World Post Day 2017

Today is World Post Day. Bureau Telecommunicatie en Post (BT&P) would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all who work in the postal sector. This day has been celebrated every year since 1969 on 9 October as a commemoration of the founding of Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874. The main purpose of this day is to raise awareness of the Post’s role in the everyday lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development.

In 2015 Member States of the United Nations committed themselves to working together towards achieving the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and take action to reverse climate change. Playing its part in this global effort, the postal sector today has a more relevant role than ever by providing infrastructure for inclusive development.

The UPU strives for mutual cooperation between the various key players in the postal sector and is committed to ensuring a truly universal network of up-to-date products and services to promote further development of the sector. The organization fulfils an advisory, mediating and liaison role for governments, regulators and postal operators and provides technical assistance and solutions for the upgrade of postal services, – products and – infrastructure where needed.
