Every day, as information and communication technology (ICT) become indispensable at all levels of society, the world is becoming more and more dependent on internet infrastructure. We use ICT infrastructure in endless ways, for example, to conduct business, look up information, communicate with each other, etc. Industrial control systems also make use of Internet infrastructure, making the Internet a vital component of the economy. This adds a new dimension to internet use: high systems-security requirements.
A safe internet is extremely important to our economy and community. Our infrastructure must be designed to resist any cyberattack or accident affecting the internet. In order to control such risks, the government, actors within the field of the internet and the community as a whole, must unite to protect our ICT (information and communication technologies) infrastructure, keeping it safe and free from any “cyber accidents.”
To achieve this, Bureau Telecommunicatie en Post has developed a masterplan that includes many aspects and elements to guarantee the security and integrity of our internet infrastructure. Around the world, more and more efforts are being undertaken to raise the awareness of individuals and businesses on the risks involved in Internet use. This year, following suit of these global developments, Bureau Telecommunicatie en Post, jointly with Caricert, will be actively participating in the Internet Security Awareness Month, which will be held for the very first time here in Curaçao, focusing on the dangers of Internet use.
These activities of the Bureau Telecommunication en Post and Caricert will continue throughout the month of October 2015, with the slogan: “Think before you connect.”
The program is aimed at three focus groups:
- Children up to 18 years of age
- Youngsters and the elderly
- Private enterprises, the government and their subsidiaries
The program’s aim is to inform people in Curaçao of the risks they are exposed to, and how to protect themselves, when they are on the internet. During the month of October, several social and other media will be employed in order to reach the people of Curaçao and provide them with information on all developments in this field.
This morning, on October 1, 2015, the minister of Traffic, Transportation and Urban Planning, Ms. Suzanne Camelia-Römer, who is also responsible for the Bureau Telecommunicatie en Post and Caricert, inaugurated this Cybersecurity Awareness Program at the Goilo School, St. Michielsweg 14, Julianadorp.
